Love & Death: The True Story Behind The Murder Of Betty Gore

We were both sent the Texas Monthly articles and the nonfiction book, Evidence of Love, and I read those articles and I thought, “Oh my God. If this wasn’t true, you absolutely couldn’t tell the story. You could not make this up.” Reality is way, way stranger than fiction.

The Crime and Trial

She even cleaned herself at Gore's house before she left, leaving the Gores' 1-year-old baby alone crying in her crib, according to the Dallas Morning News. She went home to change her clothes and bandage a cut she received on her foot during her fight with Gore. She then picked up her kids — along with the Gores' daughter Alisa — from church. She told a friend that she had seen Gore earlier in the day and spent so much time chatting, that it left her no time for other errands.

The phone rang again almost as soon as Candy hung up. Since it was Saturday morning, everyone was home, listening to the radios and trading information by phone. As Richard left, Jerry and Lester went on to the master bedroom, where they found nothing.

Later that afternoon, Montgomery took her kids and Alisa to the movies and watched "The Empire Strikes Back." That night, Alisa slept over, according to Texas Monthly. For 10 months, Candy and Allan carried on their extramarital affair, unbeknownst to their respective suspicious spouses. Seven months after the affair ended amicably, Candy — still friends with her lover and his wife — went over to the Gore house for an errand when Betty allegedly confronted her about the affair. Betty attacked, and Candy killed her friend with 41 blows from a three-foot ax.

She was ready to pick up her children and Betty Gore’s daughter Alisa at church. Down a slight incline, left onto the gravel, and up the steeply inclined driveway. Only now could the house be seen, sitting on a little knoll, shrouded by two or three red oaks. It was like a contemporary cathedral in wood and glass, with the stylishly unfinished look of a Colorado ski lodge.

And you saw her, hopefully in her point of view, trying to pretend almost as if it didn’t happen. If there was any way to blink it away, to sing it away, to make this horror go away, that’s what was going to happen. Of course, she had the information; she was there. She was found not guilty, but she will never be innocent.

Allan needn’t have worried about Candy changing her mind. When she returned from vacation, it was obvious that she had missed him as much as he missed her. They made a date for the Como, but after the lunch and sex, they spent most of their time catching up on each other’s lives.

And I think neither of them were seen and heard in their relationships. That’s part of what they both needed that they weren’t getting, without making a judgment about that. But she didn’t pick the hottest guy around to have the affair with. There’s something that’s very moving about that.

The book had a white cover, which stood out in sharp relief because, in the harsh overhead light that glared off the harvest-gold linoleum, it was one of the few objects in the room not coated in blood. Per a detailed 1984 account from Texas Monthly, it was in the autumn of 1978 that Betty suggested to Allan it was time for them to have a second child. This time, however, she wanted to plan the pregnancy down to the exact week so she could give birth in the summer, when she wouldn’t have to take time off of work. It had been something of a surprise when Allan Gore and Betty Pomeroy got married.

On it, in Magic Marker, Candy had made two columns. The column on the left was headed “WHYS.” The column on the right said, “WHY-NOTS.” When she said she was inviting him over to discuss the pros and cons, she wasn’t kidding. She also knew, from their last few phone conversations, that Allan was leaning toward a decision not to have an affair. Betty and Allan were married in January 1970 and they eventually settled in the suburbs of Dallas. When their first child was born, Allan was working for Rockwell International, an electronics conglomerate and major defense contractor. In 1976 Betty took a job teaching at an elementary school in the small town of Wylie, about ten miles east of Plano, but she didn’t enjoy her work for very long.

On June 13, 1980, bubbly church-goer Candy Montgomery killed best friend and school teacher Betty Gore. The story was sensational and captured the attention of Wylie, Texas, partially because it began with the soapy love affair between Montgomery and Gore's husband. The two began a liaison that lasted nearly a year. Just as they thought they had gotten away with it, their transgressions caught up to them and eventually resulted in a murder trial.

The girl gave her the key to one of the upstairs rooms set back from the highway. Candy drove the station wagon around to the back and started unpacking. Allan started looking forward to his daily call to Candy from work. Candy, just as starved for affection, looked forward to it as well. Candy always felt completely normal around Pat, perhaps because she was confident he would never suspect a thing. Still, Allan and Candy hesitated to take the plunge.

From a distance, nonsensically, came the frenzied, high-pitched barking of dogs. Betty moved her hands up the handle, trying to get leverage. With her head bent, Betty was off balance, and Candy shoved the ax against Betty’s body with all her might.
